Story Introduction
One day, on a Tuesday night, a middle-aged man was lurking the streets outside your house. You step outside you door to shout him off, but see that he was sifting through the garbage outside your neighbor's house. You call him over, and he walks slowly over, with a limp. His name is Max Vandenburg. You ask him why he is lurking around in the night, and he tells you that he doesn’t have a job and is starving, because his family was sent to the concentration camp. He escaped, but can not find a living, because he is Jewish. You ask him how he is. He tells you what happened yesterday.
He was walking down the streets downtown, just looking for food and water outside, when a group of Nazi soldiers marched down the cobblestone streets. They patrol the street, nodding at the wealthy store owners and entering for a cup of coffee. As they reach the old, run down Jewish bakery, they recklessly trash the window, as the owner looks down in discretion. It took all of Max’s willpower to not run up and smack the soldiers to get away, but Max knew that he didn’t even have the strength to run even ten meters. He watches as they crowd gathers around the old store, and soon the place looks complete destroyed. As the soldiers exit the run-down shack, the crowd quickly disperses and resume normal daily activities. Max, struggling and barely moving, makes his way over to the bakery. He tries to help the baker with the broken glass, and the baker thanks him with a piece of bread. As Max makes his way down the street, he ends up in an alleyway, and slowly stops by an old pillow. As the day comes to an end, and night comes around, Max lays down and rest on the pillow for the night.
As Max concludes his story, you both hear the Nazi soldiers coming in to the neighborhood, and Max is startled. He asks for refuge in your house, because he believes the soldiers are closing in on him. Do you give the poor soul shelter from the soldiers, or do you deny the pesky Jew into your house?
